My Research Project

My research examines how early career professionals navigate career decisions under pressure, with uncertainty, and through change. Rather than focusing on advancement or linear progression, my work is centered on the concept of career sustainability; how people maintain wellbeing, and employability over time.

I am part way through my PhD in organisational psychology at the University of Canterbury. The project sits at the intersection of organisational psychology and vocational behaviour, with a focus on lived experience in professional service contexts.

While the research is ongoing, early analysis suggests that career decision making is often less about dramatic turning points and more about accumulation.

Participants describe extended periods of weighing stability against change, managing competing demands across work and life, and quietly reassessing whether their current pathway remains viable. Decisions are frequently framed not as exits or failures, but as attempts to preserve health, identity, and future options.

There are also indications that timing matters. Windows of opportunity, perceived risks of staying too long, and concerns about long term employability appear to shape how and when people consider change.

Emerging Findings

It was a 6 to 8 month decision. After I’d been there for a year and a half, I started not loving the work I was doing. I had a really great team, but the work just wasn’t interesting to me anymore.
— Participant

Data collection is ongoing. Professionals who are navigating career change, uncertainty, or transition may be eligible to take part.

Participation involves a short intake form, followed by an optional interview lasting approximately 60 minutes. Conversations are informal and focus on how career decisions are actually experienced, there is no right or wrong! Your interview will be confidential and anonymised.

At this stage, I am particularly keen to hear from people who are:

  • Aged between 25–35

  • A 2010–2020 university graduate

  • Working in New Zealand, in a professional services industry (e.g., law, finance, accounting, IT, project management)

  • Have changed careers, or are considering a change in career or job.

Interviews can be conducted via Zoom or in person. Participants who complete an interview will receive a $50 voucher as a thank you for their time.
